Frequently Asked Questions

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is also known as talk therapy, counseling, or, simply, therapy. Psychotherapy provides a wonderful opportunity for deep healing and significant personal growth. My practice is influenced by elements of EMDR therapy, Schema Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy to help my clients cope with painful past experiences, maximize their current potential, and set and achieve future goals.

To whom do you provide services?

I provide individual therapy for adults and older adolescents (ages 16 and up) who are experiencing emotional and/or interpersonal difficulties. I also provide clinical consultation to other mental health providers and am and EMDRIA-Approved EMDR Consultant.

How do I make an appointment?

Contact me at (914) 768-3276 to make an appointment for an initial session. You can also email me at earmstrongpsychotherapy@gmail.com

What can I expect from the initial sessions?

During the consultation period, we will clarify what it is that has brought you to therapy and what you feel are your central issues and goals. We will also discuss concrete issues such as scheduling, fees, and whether or not you need additional referrals or services. Initial sessions are usually 60 minutes, and subsequent sessions are 45 minutes. EMDR processing sessions are typically 60-90 minutes.

Where are you located?

I am currently holding all sessions virtually, but my office is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The office address is 200 West 90th Street, Suite 1F. Click here for a map.

What are your fees?

My fees are in line with other private practice clinicians in the NYC area. If you are worried you cannot afford therapy, please contact me anyway and we will see if we can make arrangements. If for some reason I cannot see you, I will work with you to find a high-caliber mental health professional who can.

What forms of payment do you accept?

Fees are paid at each session by Venmo, Zelle, check, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover).

Do you have a cancellation policy?

At least a 24-hour notification is required to reschedule or cancel appointments. Without this notification, you will be expected to pay for the session in full. I will always do my best to schedule a make-up session at a mutually convenient time.

Do you take insurance?

For PPO reimbursement, I am considered an "out-of-network provider." This means that you will be required to pay for your therapy and then get reimbursed by your insurance company. I will provide you with the necessary paperwork to help make that as easy as possible.

Are the therapy sessions confidential?

The confidentiality of all communications between a client and a psychotherapist is protected by law. Aside from certain specific situations, a psychotherapist cannot tell anyone what you have discussed in therapy or even that you are in therapy without a client's permission. In most situations, the psychotherapist can only release information about a client's treatment to others if the client signs a written authorization form. We can discuss this at greater length during your initial consultation if you have specific questions or concerns.

Where to find therapy for BIPOC communities?

Find Black Therapist is a great resource for BIPOC individuals/couples seeking mental health professionals. It's a comprehensive directory of black and minority therapists across the US, providing access to culturally competent mental health care.
